A model and mother of four, has written a novel that is inspired about her past experiences of being bullied and called a “dalmatian” or “cow.” As an outspoken advocate of the skin condition Vitiligo, Iomikoe Johnson, who is from Lake Charles, Louisiana shares to the world how it is to learn, accept and promote self-love to all the women out there who feel differently.

38-year-old Johnson began to see signs of her Vitiligo when she was 25. This skin condition, in which pigment cells are destroyed in certain areas of the skin causes loss of pigmentation and shows white patches of skin in different locations of the body. During that time, she was endlessly bullied and instead of letting all the negativity get to her, she decided to follow her dreams of becoming a model and inspire other women, just as her role model Winnie Harlow showed her.

In Johnson’s new book entitled ‘The Spotted Girl Who Empowered The World”, she writes about a young girl, who in the first year of high school has started to show signs of Vitiligo. She then experiences bullying and issues with body positivity, before she realizes that all her family and friends are there to help her out through this trying time; which is exactly what Johnson went through.

In addition to just reaching out to others that have Vitiligo, Johnson’s main goal is to be able to inspire everyone that doesn’t feel like they fit the mold of unrealistic body ideals that is seen as normal, by societal terms.

“I want people to know that beauty starts from within,” Johnson said told the Independent. “If I can do it, so can you, believe in yourself and love the skin you’re in.”

According to Vitiligo Support International, about 1 percent of the world’s population, or 50 million people have Vitiligo. In the United States, about 2-5 million people have this skin condition, which can appear at any age.
