Snapchat Creates Mini-Drone That Can Follow You Around And Land On Your Hand After Use

Described as “Your friendly flying camera from Snap” this is the social media conglomerates second stab at Hardware, after launching Spectacles around five years ago.

Named Pixy, it’s a yellow puck selfie camera that flies around your head, follows you around, taking off from your hand and capturing all the videos that you want. It then sends it to Snapchat for uploading, making it one of the friendlier and cheaper options on the market.

With millions of active users daily, Snapchat’s miniature drone costs $249.99, and has present flight paths which are floating, orbiting, and just following you wherever you go.

Launched on April 28, the American company shared that while their original platform was to use your phone camera for ‘self-expression and communication,’ “Today, we’re bringing it to new heights with a flying camera called Pixy.” They also describe it as “a pocket-sized, free-flying sidekick” that manages to not only find its way back to your hand, it can land very gently at the end of every flight.

It was originally designed to be a companion to Snapchat, but Pixy can be used with “any other platform.” The only difference is that videos from flights will be wirelessly transferred and saved into Snapchat memories instead of being uploaded as a regular video. But customers can use the editing tools ‘Lenses, and Sounds’ on Snapchat to customize their captured videos.

The tiny knob on the top of the ‘quadcopter’ also allows users to select what type of photo or video they prefer. Moreover, the mini-drone also depends on computer vison and object recognition technology to identify people’s faces and bodies, allowing them to either follow, “orbit” or even land back on the palm of someone’s hand.

Pixy explains, “With a few taps, you can automatically crop into portrait and apply quick Smart Edits, like Hyperspeed, Bounce, Orbit 3D and Jump Cut.”

Take a look at the video below to see the Pixy in action.
