This Brewery Is Making Beer And Creating Green Energy All At Once

A farm in Pennsylvania has decided to partner with a microbrewery nearby in order to produce an alternative fuel that’s made with brewer’s waste and organic matter.

The Dickinson College Farm locate in Pennsylvania, united with the Molly Pitcher Brewing Co., as well as other local farms, to make huge quantities of sustainable biogas from the materials created from brewing that are normally discarded after use.

According to Dickinson College Farm’s livestock operations manager, Matt Steiman, “In a nutshell, biogas is where we take organic waste materials and convert them into methane.” He shared that brewery waste, food waste, and livestock manure are all used as the fuels for the process.

Normally, during a typical week for Molly Pitcher, they use over 1,000 pound of brewer’s grain to produce their beer at the brewery in Carlisle. But instead of allowing the used up grain to end up in landfills as it usually does, Steiman now collects it, bringing it to the Dickinson’s Farm, where it is now put to good use.

On the farm, the digester transforms the waste into clean and burnable methane gas, which is a huge win for the farm. This means that they are able to create enough methane to power their own operations and even the operations of a neighboring farm on a daily basis, while managing to heave more than enough left over to sell it back to a utility company.

Moreover, it’s also good for the environment. As shared by the founder of the brewery and its head brewer, Tim Fourlas, “Now we’re not just brewing beer, but we’re also trying to help the environment and hopefully lessen the carbon impact that we have as a brewery.”
